"Most six year olds are content watching TV and playing with friends. But this Trotwood-Madison 1st grader has greater ambitions and, thanks to her mother, they are paying off.
After last year's appearance in a TV commercial for Dayton Public Schools, LaRashia Simone Edwards has started getting more attention for modeling and acting work. Now she has one more achievement to add to her portfolio.
LaRashia's story and picture appeared in the March issue of "Ebony" magazine exposing her to a whole new national audience. As part of a feature article about parenting, LaRashia and her mother, Culpatrice Foster, were highlighted as an example of the effects of being a positive role model.
Foster, who is the regional sales manager for the Dayton Weekly News, also had her start as a young model at the age of 10. She said everything is beginning to snowball for her daughter.
The cute and energetic LaRashia was able to sit still long enough to answer a few questions this week. She said she is hoping to be accepted into a performing arts school, which should open the door for even more auditions.
LaRashia likes modeling, acting and singing. "I want to get better on the runway," she said. And for that her mother plans to build a full size practice runway in the back yard.
Besides her mom, her favorite role models are Tyra Banks and Twiggy.
And she still has time to be a six year old. Her favorite places to eat out are Olive Garden, J Alexanders and Red Lobster. "But I don't like lobster," she admits. At home its mac and cheese, pizza, and barbeque chicken.
Her mom, a Central State grad, is looking forward to making new contacts for LaRashia and attending more auditions including a trip to California next spring during television's 'Pilot Season'.
Foster has also helped her daughter start a new foundation to help local families in need. Together they have created LaRashia’s own web site at www.larashia.com
“I like working with my mom,” she said. And it already shows.
